<idPurp>The Statistical Areas Level 1 (SA1) have generally been designed as the smallest unit for the release of Census data; however, limited census data may also be available at the Mesh Block level for the 2016 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). SA1s have a population of between 200 and 800 people with an average population size of approximately 400 people.
The ASGS is constructed on the principle that it must fulfil user needs for geospatially enabled statistics while, also conforming to general classification principles.
The ASGS is designed to meet user needs for social, demographic and economic statistics. The regions of the ASGS below the State and Territory level are designed such that they are:
- useful and relevant for data dissemination
- flexible for aggregation into larger units
- useful building blocks for user-defined regions.</idPurp>
